Mount the bat house approximately 12–20 feet above the ground in an open location that receives several hours of direct sunlight each day. The sun helps warm the interior, creating the temperatures bats prefer for roosting and raising their young. A building or pole is generally preferable to a tree, where shade and branches can limit warmth and access.

Bats can be particular about their roosting sites, so be patient—it may take several seasons for a new house to become occupied. Place it somewhere accessible for occasional winter maintenance and away from outdoor dining or gathering areas, as an occupied house will naturally drop guano below.
